Shoveling Snow Fingers Swollen For Hours

Werità The Hidden ...

New_windows7_starter_wallpaper_by_tonev retraced my steps. After the review published

sull'EeePC 1005HA , I was overwhelmed with questions via IM, not so much on the netbook itself as the Operating System, or the infamous Windows Starter Edition 7.

The full review, as mentioned above, can be found on Geekerie.it , but since the topic has generated interest and especially for the lazy, recover my comments here (still valid) on W7 Starter .

1) "You can not change the desktop background"
False. Or rather, it is true that W7S does not do it by default.
Given that I find the background selected as "unique" simple and pleasant, I realize the inconvenience that may cause this limitation. And of course it should also be noticed Asus at home, as directly from their website you can download the utility
System Settings that does just that. For the truth is nothing but a version of "branded" by Oceanis Change Background . This program really does not set a new wallpaper, but it creates a kind of active content on your desktop. We can also decide to make a slideshow of images. The other alternatives that are all the rage and you find online are Starter Background Changer, which interacts with Windows Explorer allows you to change the wallpaper, thanks in the "Personalize" from the context menu that appears and Starter Wallpaper Changer (perhaps easier). All these solutions are completely free and legal.
2) You can only use the 'interface "Windows Basic", so there is no Aero.
True. In order to use the Aero interface need to have at least one license Home Premium Windows 7, sold separately at a cost of 70 €. Personally, having seen her in action on other netbooks, I found it a bit less' reactive, but fully usable. But here it becomes a matter of needs.
3) You can not disconnect the user change
True. It's never been a function of which I used extensively, and I also think that the netbook has a 99% mainly one user. But it is a silly limitation. To be honest I have not tried to see what happens or if you can create different users. In case I will update this post.
4) You can connect multiple monitors
True. But we also try to be rational and pragmatic: there is a real need for multi-monitor in a device with a maximum resolution of 1024 × 600?
5) It does not work and even Virtual PC XP Mode
True. Almost: it does not work the latest release of Virtual PC. Mode for XP, however, nothing. Work, but
Virtual PC 2007 for Microsoft to stay at home, or Sun Virtualbox . In short, the alternatives (free or paid) are not lacking.
6) There is no Windows Media Center and you can not create Groups Home
True. But I would have felt more like a failure if we were talking about a EeeBox ... Specifically, raise your hand if you use your netbook as a media server. Anyway, even In that case, there are many freeware alternatives (one among many,
Mediaportal ), simply turn to Google San .
As for the Home Groups, you can create locally, but you can access to those created on other machines with versions that allow for the creation. In each case depends very much on the network you created.
7) You can not play DVD Video
False. It 's more correct to say that: "The version of Windows Media Player is not contained in W7S can play DVD" .
Thankfully, the network media player is full of (mostly free) can do it. Personally, I relied on the excellent VLC
, with satisfaction that I use at home or in office.

If you have any questions, I am here.

Small update.

I started using Starter Background Changer instead of System Settings , in fact, that "overlaps" another wallpaper to the default, and it seems to work better.
